Mayor of Matamata-Piako

The mayor is the leader of the council. Their job is to promote a vision for the district and lead the development of the council’s plans, policies and budget. The mayor appoints the deputy mayor, establishes committees for particular topics, and appoints chairs for those committees. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper.   • Encourage a good work culture and environment where staff are valued and supported to perform their roles. Living Wage is already applied.

    Ensure management undertakes and implements a reorganisational review with the Two Waters services moving to a CCO next year.

    Keep people informed via different media avenues including digital and paper formats to enable participation in policy reviews and plans.

  • Ensure council staff earn above a $100,000 salary and immediately deduct salary cuts from rates for anyone earning over $100,000.

    Establish a mayor and councillors Facebook group to engage directly with the community with the mayor and council as admins.

    Propose local council amalgamation for immediate sustainability as a treaty of joining under trial.
