Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

Ensure continued earthquake strengthening practices and monitoring with follow-up checks.
Reduce greenhouse gas emissions by using more eco-friendly options where reasonable.
Rewild areas with low developmental value by planting trees and native plants that promote nature's self-regulation.
Commit council to moving away from gas within a certain time period, likely 20 years.
Create a climate and enviro committee to oversee council capex, opex and decision making pertaining to climate impact.
