Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

Advocate for flood mitigation with the water entity to protect homes and communities.
Support planting more trees across the city, especially in the town centre where shade and green spaces are needed.
Commit to ongoing adaptation measures including development rules to constrain coastal and low lying areas.
Protect urban areas with wetlands and riparian planting including building on the 250,000 trees already planted.
Reduce greenhouse gas emissions through replacing gas boilers at pools with electric and electric cars fleet change.
