Arrowtown-Kawarau Ward
The Queenstown-Lakes District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 11 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). three councillors will be elected from the Arrowtown-Kawarau ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Utilities and services

Councils are responsible for a wide range of utilities and services that we all rely on, from rubbish and recycling to street cleaning. Councils are currently also responsible for managing waste water, storm water and drinking water infrastructure – the ‘Three Waters’. But that may be about to change, with central government seeking to shift the delivery of Three Waters services to four new larger entities, which could borrow enough to upgrade the country’s water infrastructure.

    Improve recycling services to reduce waste to landfill.

    Invest in sustainable wastewater solutions to protect rivers and lakes.

  • Make it easier for homes and businesses to go solar, improving energy resilience and sustainability.

    Support establishment of a well-run water CCO to deliver expertise and community benefit with strong accountability.

    Work with stakeholders to ensure stormwater is considered at the design stage of large builds such as supermarkets, schools and large-scale developments.

  • Deny renewal of Victoria Flats tip to extend to 2050 and 2065 as it is next to Kawarau and requires trucking all the way from Ranfurly.

    Re-examine the decision to go to a council-controlled organisation as it was rammed through and will lead to a lack of local control and higher rates.

    Stop dumping 12 million litres of treated sewerage into Kawarau and relocate the plant.
