Mayor of Queenstown-Lakes

The mayor is the leader of the council. Their job is to promote a vision for the district and lead the development of the council’s plans, policies and budget. The mayor appoints the deputy mayor, establishes committees for particular topics, and appoints chairs for those committees. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Queenstown-Lakes District Council mayoral election.

Why I'm standing

I'm contesting the mayoralty in the upcoming elections because this district deserves leadership. It deserves elected councillors who are enabled to do their job in setting direction, and a council organisation that delivers competently across the board. We need to reset council procedures and culture to restore trust, openness, accountability and focus on core services. I believe that inclusive leadership will enable us to achieve 'Smart Growth' that delivers for people, businesses, communities and environment.

About me

I've had 25 years of being in business, 15 years in public service with 15 years as a worker advocate alongside 25 years of community group participation and leadership. A mayor has 2 functions under the Local Government Act: to lead councillors and to lead the community. A good skillset is necessary to do this effectively and you can read about the skill I have on johnglover.co.

My priorities
  1. Amend CE recruitment process to fully include all councillors.
  2. Revoke the authority delegated to CE for the Lakeview project to enable council oversight.
  3. Prioritise a visitor levy so visitors pay towards the infrastructure needed for them.
