Mayor of Selwyn

The mayor is the leader of the council. Their job is to promote a vision for the district and lead the development of the council’s plans, policies and budget. The mayor appoints the deputy mayor, establishes committees for particular topics, and appoints chairs for those committees. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Selwyn District Council mayoral election.

Why I'm standing

I love Selwyn and grew up here. My family and I live in Darfield. It's been a real privilege to be your mayor through the changes of the last 9 years. I have built partnerships and developed plans to ensure our long-term success, but the job isn't complete. At least 8 out of 10 councillors will be new so we need proven mayoral leadership to listen to the new voices and continue our momentum.

About me

I am independent and have never been a part of a political party. I put our community first. Having grown up on a farm I understand our deep agricultural roots, and having been mayor for 9 years I see and embrace our multicultural community. Council is about governance, vision and direction setting with the community. I make a good representative because I listen and care about all voices, not just the noisy ones.

My priorities
  1. Prioritise rates affordability by focussing on delivering an achievable 7% lift next year.
  2. Continue using 80% of capital spending for water and transport infrastructure.
  3. Set long-term vision to avoid wasting today stepping in the wrong direction, making long-term decisions.
