Southland District Council

Mararoa Waimea Ward
The Southland District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 12 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). three councillors will be elected from the Mararoa Waimea ward. There will be no election this year because there are the same number of candidates as there are positions.

Whether public transport is the responsibility of the regional or local council depends on where you are in the country. Local councils also own 87% of New Zealand’s roads.

  • Negotiate more equitable funding for the southern roading network from the New Zealand Transport Agency, considering regional economics and contribution.

    Plan and fund the roading network at a regional level along with core New Zealand Transport Agency funding, with more local funding for urban areas.

    Prioritise using gravel moved for flood mitigation in roading where possible to keep both material and project costs down.

  • Advocate for increased safety on the Milford Road and further development of multi-purpose trails.

    Continue to work on Te Anau Manapouri airport becoming self funding.

    Ensure roading infrastructure remains fit for purpose through appropriate investment and advocate for better NZTA funding contribution.
