New Plymouth General Constituency
The Taranaki Regional Council makes decisions about managing resources in the region, such as air, water, soil and the coastline. It also carries out plant and pest control, helps prepare for natural disasters, and is involved in regional transport. The council is made up of 11 councillors. Councillors are elected to represent constituencies (areas in the region). five councillors will be elected from the New Plymouth constituency. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

    Adapt to climate change by strengthening river, coast and flood protection while supporting communities to plan for more extreme weather.

    Prepare the region for natural disasters by maintaining strong civil defence capability and working with communities to build resilience.

  • Look at opening up the Stratford Okahukura railway line to provide an alternative route in and out of Taranaki.

    Reduce the use of trucks on the road by promoting rail for freight and public transport.

    Work on the land and freshwater plan which council has already started to help deliver cleaner water in our rivers.

  • Advocate for low-emission council operations and transport and promote climate-smart land use and infrastructure planning.

    Encourage community-led adaptation and education initiatives.

    Support nature-based solutions to reduce flood and erosion risks and strengthen civil defence readiness across the region.

  • Advocate for increased input from climate science and incorporate farming practices that are both economically and environmentally viable.

    Commit to enhancing sustainable practices outlined in the long-term regional plan.

    Provide leadership by promoting sustainable practices across the region.
