Waihōpai Toetoe Community Board

The Waihōpai Toetoe Community Board represents your local community and advocates to Southland District Council about local issues, including public transport and facilities such as libraries and parks. The board is made up of seven members: six members elected by voters, and one member from the Southland District Council.  This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Local governments play a central role in protecting the environment, reducing waste and safeguarding biodiversity. The worsening state of New Zealand’s lakes and rivers is a major challenge for local councils, which work with regional councils in the management of water resources in their area.

  • Control pests, mainly possums in the area, using trapping as they have returned despite a blitz five years ago.

    Recognise that rivers appear to turn brown after heavy rain as a consequence of living in a region with predominantly clay soils.

    Stop expensive recycling unless there is a lucrative market for the products, which currently does not exist. Consider burning rubbish.
