Thames-Coromandel General Constituency
The Waikato Regional Council makes decisions about managing resources in the region, such as air, water, soil and the coastline. It also carries out plant and pest control, helps prepare for natural disasters, and is involved in regional transport. The council is made up of 14 councillors. Councillors are elected to represent constituencies (areas in the region). one councillor will be elected from the Thames-Coromandel constituency. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Protecting the environment and managing natural resources is a key responsibility of regional councils. Regional councils are often also involved in pest control and resource management.

Protecting the environment and managing natural resources is a key responsibility of regional councils. Regional councils are often also involved in pest control and resource management.

  • Develop plans to include pest management as part of biodiversity planting for riparian margins.

    Encourage small community groups working in pest management to form a hub to enable better sourcing of funding and skills.

    Maintain funding for Waikato Regional Council maritime staff while developing a plan to address derelict vessels in our harbours.

  • Embed water quality protection in decision-making and drive increased investment in catchment and river restoration.

    Protect and restore biodiversity through Waikato Regional Council mechanisms such as the Natural Heritage Partnership Programme and Waikato Biodiversity Accord.

    Support nature-based climate solutions through initiatives beyond Waikato Regional Council land, including partnerships with landowners and communities.
