Local governments play a central role in protecting the environment, reducing waste and safeguarding biodiversity. The worsening state of New Zealand’s lakes and rivers is a major challenge for local councils, which work with regional councils in the management of water resources in their area.

Continue to push for DCC funding support for the One Coast community facility at the Waikouaiti Transfer Station.
Support local initiatives to enhance the North Coast's reputation for environmental protection and enhancement.
Adequately fund local predator-free and tree-planting programmes.
Prioritise restoration of biodiversity ecosystems in local rohe as an essential defence against climate change.
Protect rare fertile land, such as in Taieri, for food sovereignty, noting only 15% of land nationwide is in land-use category 1, 2 and 3.
Promote the rapid replacement of local waste water plants which are not performing up to standard including Waitati in the scheme.
Provide money via council for continued pest control and assist private land owners to fence off and plant streams and remnant bush areas.
Support local group Onecoast which is doing excellent work diverting waste.
Ensure river quality by working with and encouraging landowners to make it more economic with assistance.
Upgrade water infrastructure and educate the public on how to avoid wasting water.
Urge survey of creatures in the area and cull possums to control the threat of bovine TB, encouraging local commercial skin use.
