Cambridge General Ward
The Waipa District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 11 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). four councillors will be elected from the Cambridge ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper.   • Adopt measures as far as practical to mitigate and control heavy transport through Cambridge CBD and school catchments.

    Ensure existing walking and cycling paths are free of trips and hazards with rapid fixes.

    Support the continued enhancement of bus routes and services to adjacent towns and Hamilton as this is a tool for economic growth and jobs.

  • Ensure a policy is developed for controlling speed humps and speed mitigation devices within the roading network.

    Ensure Cambridge Connections report, including bridge, public transport, congestion, parking and northern access, is published by 1 December 2026.

    Ensure council works on developing a business plan for establishing a localised public transport service.

  • Build a northbound State Highway One on-ramp south of the low-level bridge to give Leamington direct access to Hamilton without clogging the town.

    Provide fast travel and easy parking in Cambridge by removing planter boxes blocking streets or reduced access, and ensure clear roads and smart design.

    Upgrade the low-level bridge to double lanes to clear AM and PM traffic, reduce delays, and keep Cambridge moving efficiently.

  • Expand public transport access across Cambridge and Waipa to ease traffic and support youth and non-drivers.

    Improve strategic planning of roads and footpaths to make daily travel safer for all.

    Promote safer cycleways and walkways for healthier and greener commuting within communities.

  • Include honest, transparent consideration of cost and all impacts on the community in Cambridge Connections.

  • Ensure accessible services for the elderly by providing easy, safe and affordable transport for seniors to cater to the increasing elderly population.

    Ensure community engagement on Cambridge Connections by consulting regularly and encouraging feedback as the project progresses.
