Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

Commit to partner with neighbourhood groups, iwi and volunteers to build stronger local networks for disaster response.
Commit to strengthen civil defence readiness and ensure emergency response plans and hubs are well resourced to be prepared for natural disasters.
Commit to upgrade vulnerable infrastructure and prioritise strengthening roads, bridges and council buildings to withstand flooding, earthquakes and storms.
Ensure the civil defence service functions well and is able to fulfil its role in an emergency.
