Whakatāne-Ōhope General Ward
The Whakatāne District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of ten councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). four councillors will be elected from the Whakatāne-Ōhope ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Utilities and services

Councils are responsible for a wide range of utilities and services that we all rely on, from rubbish and recycling to street cleaning. Councils are currently also responsible for managing waste water, storm water and drinking water infrastructure – the ‘Three Waters’. But that may be about to change, with central government seeking to shift the delivery of Three Waters services to four new larger entities, which could borrow enough to upgrade the country’s water infrastructure.

  • Ensure local decision-making is considered during water infrastructure upgrades through the Local Water Done Well reform.

    Make sure animal control policies are centred on safety and aggressive dogs, enabling swift response to menacing dogs.

    Set clear priorities to see improvement in waste minimisation and recycling in the district, and empower the waste team to achieve this.

  • Ensure regular effective street cleaning to keep Whakatane clean, safe and welcoming for residents and visitors.

    Maintain and enhance Three Waters services by ensuring safe, reliable water, wastewater and stormwater systems for all residents.

    Prioritise safe, clean and abundant drinking water for Whakatane.

  • Avoid selling assets to pay the bills as past experience shows this just leads to higher costs.

    Maintain a ringfence option for three waters until a better government plan is introduced. LWDW is not a plan, it is the failure of a plan.

    Maintain public ownership of assets and push back strongly on plans to sell them off to for profit providers.
