Whakatāne-Ōhope Community Board

The Whakatāne-Ōhope Community Board represents your local community and advocates to Whakatane District Council about local issues, including public transport and facilities such as libraries and parks. The board is made up of seven members: six members elected by voters, and one member from the Whakatane District Council.  This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper.   • Promote an active, healthy community and support initiatives that improve health and wellbeing such as mountain bike tracks and safe walkways.

    Encourage creativity by supporting Arts Whakatāne and other artistic community groups to be attractive and represent the rohe.

    Empower and raise awareness around disability access and aged concern to WDC and support initiatives that improve accessibility for all public.

  • Support the arts by implementing the Arts, Culture and Creativity policy, including establishing an "Arts Navigator" position.

    Develop Te Whare Taonga ō Taketake, Whakatāne Museum and Research Centre to become a visitor-friendly digitally interactive museum.

    Continue to support events of national significance like the Molly Morpeth Canaday Art Award and New Zealand Surf Lifesaving Championships.

  • Build recreation and cultural assets locals can afford and visitors will pay good money to enjoy.

    Create events and activities locals love and visitors celebrate and travel for, bringing income back to the community.
