Mayor of Whanganui

The mayor is the leader of the council. Their job is to promote a vision for the district and lead the development of the council’s plans, policies and budget. The mayor appoints the deputy mayor, establishes committees for particular topics, and appoints chairs for those committees. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Whanganui District Council mayoral election.

Why I'm standing

I believe Whanganui needs strong, stable, experienced leadership to keep positive momentum and move confidently into the future. I led a unified council throughout local government's toughest challenges during my mayoralty, delivering New Zealand's lowest average rates rise of 2.2% this year. I have also invested more in infrastructure including pipes, roads and footpaths and paid off additional debt.

About me

I will keep rate increases low, cut red tape and fast-track building consents next term. I will grow Whanganui's economy by launching a local School of Design and Technology, exploring options to reduce power costs, attracting new industry and supporting community projects. I will continue to pursue an Air Chathams Christchurch route and transition their headquarters to Whanganui.

My priorities
  1. Keep future rate rises low after achieving New Zealand's lowest average rates rise of 2.2% this year.
  2. Set up a housing trust, make infill housing easier and develop second-storey apartments in Victoria Ave.
  3. Allocate a minimum of 80% of council investment to basics including roads, footpaths, pipes and flood protection.
