Whanganui General Ward
The Whanganui District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 12 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). ten councillors will be elected from the Whanganui ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence.     Stop focus on carbon and focus on flooding issues instead.

  • Restrict development in areas that will be negatively affected by climate change.

    Seek information on the areas of Whanganui that will be affected by rising sea levels and flooding and act accordingly.

    Work with civil defence and other agencies to ensure plans are in place to best protect people and property from climate disaster.

  • Support local food resilience to ensure Whanganui withstands supply disruptions during climate events or natural disasters.

    Enhance flood resilience by upgrading and maintaining adequate drainage, reinforcing stop banks and maintaining river warning systems.

    Strengthen flood, earthquake and tsunami readiness with clear evacuation routes, reliable warning systems and resilient infrastructure.

  • Commit to continuing to champion climate change adaptation in line with council strategy.

    Support ongoing resilient initiatives to keep the community safe and protect business.

  • Ensure civil defence is appropriately resourced to deliver ongoing training and support to isolated flood-prone communities.

    Ensure sufficient funding is budgeted to achieve the initiatives already identified in our emissions reduction roadmap.

    Lobby central government to ensure the RMA reforms give clarity and guidance on climate adaptation, including managed retreat.

  • Conduct audits of electricity and gas use and reduce consumption while investigating renewable energy.

    Review the roadmap to reduce emissions which Whanganui District Council created after conducting greenhouse gas stocktake to measure our impact.

    Stay the course with the Whanganui District Council climate change strategy, keep focused and lead by example.
