The Auckland Council makes strategic decisions for Auckland on public transport, urban planning, environmental protection and other big issues. The council provides funding to local boards to provide public services in their areas, and manages council-controlled organisations which provide infrastructure, such as public transport, water and sewerage. The councillors and mayor make up the governing body, which shares governance of Auckland Council with the 21 local boards. The governing body is made up of 20 councillors plus the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in Auckland). Two councillors will be elected from your ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Helping communities get from A to B is a key responsibility of local government, from making sure the buses run on time to providing car parking and walking and cycling paths. Whether public transport is the responsibility of the regional or local council depends on where you are in the country. Local councils also own 87% of New Zealand’s roads.

  • Provide rapid transit to the central city from all 19 mainland local board areas.

    Prioritise Light Metro to the Airport via the City Rail Link, the Western Rail Line and beside SH20 and SH20A for $2 billion.

    Design arterial roads so that they provide cycle paths and bus priority and retain regular kerbside parking/loading in off-peak hours.

  • Ensure that transport policies address environmental and practical needs for the future. Support fuel tax and limited congestion charging.

    Overturn Auckland Transport current car parking planning – it needs a rethink and a reality check. Retain the downtown carpark.

    Support expansion of off-road cycle paths in general and on road cycle paths with better stakeholder buy-in – not the Harbour Bridge for now.

  • Support the improvement of public transport with frequent buses and services, routes that services all communities.

    Support fair pay and better working condition for transport workers to increase and improve services.

    Advocate for a balanced transport options, providing walking, cycleways and safer streets with road space allocation for all road users.

  • Encourage the improvement of pay and conditions for transport workers to address shortages which are undermining frequency and reliability.

    Support the rebalancing of road corridor space allocation, with a focus on safety for all road users.

    Advocate for joined up cycling infrastructure across the city, across local board boundaries.
