Environment Southland is the regional council for Southland. It makes decisions about managing resources in the region, such as air, water, soil and the coastline. It also carries out plant and pest control, helps prepare for natural disasters, and is involved in regional transport. The council is made up of 12 councillors. Councillors are elected to represent constituencies (areas in the region). Six councillors will be elected from the Invercargill-Rakiura constituency. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper.   • Environment Southland has a limited role here. Its policies should ensure the economy is sustainable and does not damage the environment.

    Promote businesses that are sustainable, eg providing incentives to change away from fossil fuel use.

    Ensure tourism businesses do not damage pristine and remote areas such as coastal areas in Fiordland.

  • Incentivise local business and industry to lower their environmental footprints, with Environment Southland leading by example.

    Ensure Jobs for Nature projects have continual funding and successful outcomes.

    Encourage more employment opportunities with the creation of additional restorative environmental projects.

  • Support research and development into new, resilient horticulture-based employment opportunities.

    Enable local small-scale, high-employment industry, such as market-gardening.
