Greater Wellington Regional Council

Porirua-Tawa Constituency
The Greater Wellington Regional Council makes decisions about managing resources in the region, such as air, water, soil and the coastline. It also carries out plant and pest control, helps prepare for natural disasters, and is involved in regional transport. The council is made up of 13 councillors. Councillors are elected to represent constituencies (areas in the region). Two councillors will be elected from the Porirua-Tawa constituency. This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Greater Wellington Regional Council election.

Many councils help support local business and economic development. Some promote tourism in their area, or provide business support services and grants.

  • Support the implemenation of Te matarau a Māui which will develop an economic vision for Māori in Te Ūpoko o Te Ika, Wellington Region.

Support youth employment by offering on the job trainee positions or job experience for apprentices or students with the regional council.

Reinstate the Take Charge program which is a pollution prevention program which assists with compliance and cleaner production methods.

  • Communicate with local businesses on ways of introducing a holiday and or weekend internship for the local youth to experience different jobs.

Work with local businesses to encourage and promote monthly loyalty discounts cards, like coffee shops have.

Work with local business to find out what the issues are that they are facing and engage in dialogue to be able find solutions together.

  • Making public transport free will help with work travel affordability. Young people/students are negatively impacted by high transport costs.

I advocate moving Greater Wellington's head office from Wellington City to Porirua. This makes sense for many reasons.

Greater Wellington should be involved in developing a Spatial Plan for the whole region which would include industry and employment plans.
