Hurunui District Council

East Ward
The Hurunui District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 10 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Two councillors will be elected from the East ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper.   • Continue to provide the community team with resources and support to help develop community projects and engagement.

    Encourage more locals into council roles – deepening connections within communities and providing well-paying jobs for those that can work.

    Provide and develop avenues and opportunities for all members of our communities to be heard, seen, and contribute.

  • Build on the success of our Water Liaison committee model to engage with communities in other council infrastructure, service areas.

    Work hard to ensure the retention of local voice and local solutions during the government review of local government

    Support and grow wider cultural, ethnic partnerships and inclusion creating greater ground up engagement with communities and council.

  • Adjust council policy to better encourage and empower local community groups.

    Encourage and empower all differing ethnic communities to have a good relationship with council.

    Encourage a good working relationship between council staff and councillors.
