Hurunui District Council

East Ward
The Hurunui District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 10 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Two councillors will be elected from the East ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper.     Encourage walking and cycling with safe affordable infrastructure.

  • Continue to focus on safe resilient roading in the district. This is imperative to supporting both the rural and tourism economy.

    Focus on improving safe cycling opportunities for travel as well as recreation.

    Advocate to government to encourage a regular rail service to Hurunui as an alternate travel option.

  • Work with the current road safety committee, emergency services, Waka Kotahi, and other agencies to further the road safety message.

    Develop a public transport system for the district that doesn't rely on volunteers and is both safe and sustainable.

    Work with the Hurunui Trail Trust to enhance and develop the current track network and develop new ones.
