Hurunui District Council

South Ward
The Hurunui District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 10 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Four councillors will be elected from the South ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper.   • Support DISTRICT-WIDE tourism growth and prosperity while maintaining balance in regards to our unique Hurunui District environmental assets.

    Build on current Mayors Taskforce for Jobs and Youth Council foundations to support/encourage youth voice, involvement, employment and retention.

    Enable APPROPRIATE local growth with a view to increasing opportunities/services while ensuring infrastructure is resilient and able to cope.

  • Encourage and enable appropriate new business to compliment and service the residential growth in Amberley and the Hurunui District.

    Support and enable our tourism sector, to maintain the Hurunui District as a premier visitor destination.

    Support initiatives from local community, such as AmberleyNZ and ADRA to consolidate a vision and marketing direction for Amberley.

  • Council to support local business whenever possible for all aspects of council business.

    Help facilitate with local businesses in an environment where youth and aged have employment opportunities.

    Support and grow cycle path through Waipāra and areas within the Hurunui not just Hanmer Springs to promote tourism across the region.

  • Address skills shortages on a region by region basis, Hurunui requirements are not the same as Christchurch requirements.

    Remove the additional Immigration NZ costs imposed on employers recently including job checks.

  • Charge Enterprise NC to respond with economic development initiatives, so that Amberley is not left behind the progress of other rural towns.

    Have the council, led by mayor, convene regular economic/business forums with local business leaders, employers, investors and owners.
