Hurunui District Council

South Ward
The Hurunui District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 10 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Four councillors will be elected from the South ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Utilities and services

Councils are responsible for a wide range of utilities and services that we all rely on, from rubbish and recycling to street cleaning. Councils are currently also responsible for managing waste water, storm water and drinking water infrastructure – the ‘Three Waters’. But that may be about to change, with central government seeking to shift the delivery of Three Waters services to four new larger entities, which could borrow enough to upgrade the country’s water infrastructure.

  • I broadly support existing council performance on utilities and services at a high level but will push hard for greater ward committee involvement.

I do not support the government Three Water programme and takeover of local assets and services. If you support Three Waters, don't vote for me.

  • Recover all natural resources to be recycled and returned to the soil through recycling options. Biochar, vermicomposting, compost.

Continue to improve the drinking water quality.

Use wise decision making in regards to drinking water, wastewater and sewerage consenting, for further development.

  • Oppose Three Waters reform in its current form. Ensure compliance with Drinking Water Standards and Three Waters infrastructure delivers as expected.

Promote ongoing education in and investigation of improved waste management initiatives inclusive of maximum recycling.

Support residents to explore possible location and opportunity for the establishment of a dog park faciltiy in the Amberley vicinity.

  • Continue the council's opposition towards Three Waters – assets paid for by generations of ratepayers should not be handed to central government.

See earlier policy around recycling and organic bins for Hurunui.

  • Oppose Three Waters.

Ensure central government's policies around rubbish/recycling is done in an environmental and cost effective manner.

  • Continue to upgrade our drinking, waste and stormwater infrastructure, to maintain compliance to national standards.

Present a nationally consistent, district-wide recycling system, while still ensuring affordable access to local refuse and recycling depots.

Address all service requests promptly and communicate progress, actions and outcomes back to the customer as soon as possible.
