Hurunui District Council

South Ward
The Hurunui District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 10 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Four councillors will be elected from the South ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Hurunui District Council election.

Why I'm standing

From a development viewpoint, Amberley/South Ward has lost ground in its development over the last ten years (despite the population increase) especially in the face of big progress and improved street appeal in other Canterbury rural towns, eg Rangiora, Kaiapoi, Rolleston etc. I want to be a strong Amberley voice at the council table to try and spark new initiatives and progress for Amberley over the next three years.

About me

I was Mayor of Hurunui District 2004-2010, and together with active and capable local councillors we achieved so much locally including expanded urban zoning, supermarket development, commercial zoning, recycling and transfer station relocation, SH1 street-scaping, and more. I sense that we have lost ground, and I believe I can be a capable and experienced voice at council to really push the Amberley/South Ward agenda.

My priorities
  1. Kick start the next stage of Amberley/South Ward development and maximise next three years' achievements.
  2. Be a loud voice for financial prudence, cost control and effective delivery of all essential services.
  3. Be a strong supporter for mayor and council on all big issues, eg Three Waters, Ecan policies and practices.
