Mayor of Hutt City

The mayor is the leader of the council. Their job is to promote a vision for the city and lead the development of the council’s plans, policies and budget. The mayor appoints the deputy mayor, establishes committees for particular topics, and appoints chairs for those committees. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Hutt City Council mayoral election.

Environment

Local governments play a central role in protecting the environment, reducing waste and safeguarding biodiversity. The worsening state of New Zealand’s lakes and rivers is a major challenge for local councils, which work with regional councils in the management of water resources in their area.

  • Establish a city goal of planting 114,000 new trees (one per person in Lower Hutt).

Commit to establishing a regional waste recovery park to significantly reduce what we send to landfill.

Commit to building Naenae Pool to GreenStar Standard 5. A first for an aquatic facility in New Zealand.

  • Strongly resist government undermining our neighbourhoods through over intensification. Six story housing without parking won't work.

Review the waste and recycling system to address current issues. Stop the plan to treble landfill fees.

Investigate options to reduce contamination of the stormwater entering our waterways.

  • There is no need to over develop Lower Hutt City. Work on maximising efficiencies on current Lower Hutt infrastructure, power and sewage.

The waste management contract needs to be looked at and a second green waste site needs to be added and recycling centres developed.

Local tech/manufacturing companies should be encouraged to develop recycling options for the Hutt City.
