Mayor of Hutt City

The mayor is the leader of the council. Their job is to promote a vision for the city and lead the development of the council’s plans, policies and budget. The mayor appoints the deputy mayor, establishes committees for particular topics, and appoints chairs for those committees. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Hutt City Council mayoral election.

Rates and revenue

The work of local government is funded mainly by property taxes in the local area, known as rates. This makes up around 60% of council expenditure, with the rest coming from user charges, investment income, regulatory fees and roading subsidies. Councils can also borrow money to spread the cost of large investments such as infrastructure over a longer period of time.

Commit to managing council's finances in a sustainable way. We will focus on issues that we can't afford to kick down the road any longer.

Introduce further initiatives, and advocate to support households which are struggling with the rising cost of living in our communities.

  • Restore financial discipline and control spending to stop the excessive rate increases. Cancel council's long-term plan to double rates.

Review the $120 million increase in back-room overheads in council's long-term plan. This will find savings to help reduce rate increases.

Stop council's plan to treble tip fees. We don't want residents to be forced to dump rubbish because our landfill is unaffordable.

  • The council needs to act like it is a small to medium sized enterprise (SME) where every single dollar is accounted for.

Lower Hutt parking per hour needs to come down, parking fines need to be reduced and needs to be controlled by the council not outsourced.

A percent increase limit on rates no matter what the housing market is doing. We want people to have family homes not just a city of rentals.
