Marlborough District Council

Marlborough Sounds General Ward
The Marlborough District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also passes local regulations and makes decisions about infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage, and about the region’s resources, including water, soil and the coastline. The council is made up of 14 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Three councillors will be elected from the Marlborough Sounds ward. This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Marlborough District Council election.

Why I'm standing

I am running for a second term as I wish to complete several projects that I have started. With so many experienced councillors retiring, I also wish to enable some form of stability in council. Local government is throwing up several reforms and new acts and it is important that we respond to these appropriately so that our region is able to best react to change. We will need to make some hard decisions.

About me

I have always believed in community first and have volunteered on many different community groups and committees. Now that I have completed almost three years on council I have a good grasp of policies, processes and people. I am aware of the issues facing our decision making processes and am not afraid of making hard decisions. I have attempted to work with many different groups in order to understand their needs.

My priorities
  1. Ensure that our communities are happy, healthy, economically sustainable and well supported.
  2. Enable our at-risk catchments to thrive and become exemplars in NZ.
  3. Ensure that we restore the Marlborough Sounds diverse ecosystems back to what they used to be.
