Marlborough District Council

Marlborough Sounds General Ward
The Marlborough District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also passes local regulations and makes decisions about infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage, and about the region’s resources, including water, soil and the coastline. The council is made up of 14 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Three councillors will be elected from the Marlborough Sounds ward. This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Marlborough District Council election.

  • Ensure appropriately zoned land is made available for affordable housing projects.

Ensure all council housing meets standards relating to warmth, affordability, accessibility, aesthetic values, and green space, etc.

Work alongside social housing entities to provide short term and long term accommodation options for the homeless.

  • Ensure proposed sites are suitable for building before granting a building consent.

Ensure enough land and the right land is being made available for housing developments.

  • Ensure more flexibility in the issuing of building consents. These should also be issued in a more timely fashion.

Consider carefully the finite supply of land in decisions on usage. Zoning should allow usage flexibility.

Design of urban spaces and streetscapes should generally focus more on people and environment rather than vehicles.

  • Aim to ensure all residents in Marlborough are housed and we have sufficient stocks of council houses available for those in need.

Reduce compliance costs (building consent/development fees) to increase new build housing affordability within the region.

Continue work with landowners to increase land supply for housing in region to increase housing affordability.
