Matamata-Piako District Council

Matamata General Ward
The Matamata-Piako District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 12 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Four councillors will be elected from the Matamata ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Whether public transport is the responsibility of the regional or local council depends on where you are in the country. Local councils also own 87% of New Zealand’s roads.

  • Ensure the District Plan is committed to including shared cycleways and walkways in any future urban development.

    Continue to promote to Waka Kotahi the need to install additional pedestrian crossing on across State Highway 27 and Firth Street.

    Ensure that the proposed Total Mobility Service is promoted and utilised to support our ageing population.

  • Invest in road infrastructure with a goal to make it last 100 years. Ban e-scooters from district and promote bikes and public transport.

    Invest in better roads to improve overall road safety, alongside better driver training for new drivers. Move heavy traffic out of towns.

    Invest in Waharoa Aerodrome to make it a domestic terminal, to better serve the district.

  • Improve our cycling trails: connect bike trails from Matamata to Karapiro.

    Support public transport, including trains within the region.

    Improve our walking connectivity with wider footpaths and more walkways.

  • Work with central government to improve bicycle and pedestrian connectivity across state highways in our town.
