Nelson Park Ward
The Napier City Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 12 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the city). Four councillors will be elected from the Nelson Park ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Whether public transport is the responsibility of the regional or local council depends on where you are in the country. Local councils also own 87% of New Zealand’s roads.

  • Promote the use of public transport within Napier city.

    Improve road safety, especially at intersections, within Napier.

    Promote walking, cycling and public transport as a way of reducing traffic congestion on Napier roads.

  • Increase promotion and encourage increased resources are dedicated to active transport.

    Challenge and work with central government agency Waka Kotahi to give more weighting to locals' experience and knowledge when planning.

    Ensure key access routes are prioritised in future planning to protect and enhance social, environmental, and economic wellbeing.

  • Protect inner city parking.

    Continue to advocate for those with disabilities through implementation of the disability parking review.

    Continue to advocate for the community directly impacted by changes to speeds and roading regardless of boundary (eg Napier/Taupō road State Highway 5).

  • Strengthen and extend our network of off-road or protected cycleways to enable safe cycle commuting. Cycling in the CBD must be safe.

    Repair and upgrade footpaths and crossings to enable wheelchairs and mobility scooters to be safely used around the city.

    Continue to install traffic-calming and safe crossing areas to reduce risks caused by speeding traffic.
