Kaitake-Ngāmotu General Ward
The New Plymouth District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 14 councillors and the mayor. Six councillors will be elected from the Kaitake-Ngāmotu ward. The other councillors will be elected from other wards or by all voters in the district. This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Climate change and resilience

Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

  • Develop a community developed action plan to reach to zero emissions. This will need wide consultation and clear priorities and leadership.

    Active support for development of alternative energy sources – especially wind and H2.

    Commit to a plan to achieve zero waste.

  • Work together with groups and individuals to facilitate innovation in response to climate change.

    Explore ways to support property owners in strengthening premises which fall below the minimum standard for earthquake strengthening.

    Stop further development of foreshores which can be shown to be vulnerable to heightened sea level.

  • Ensuring climate mitigation is measured. Ensuring the councils reduction plan has the best possible outcomes for all residents.

    Focus on providing enough monetary recourses for adaptation as well as mitigation.
