Northland Regional Council

Coastal Central General Constituency
The Northland Regional Council makes decisions about managing resources in the region, such as air, water, soil and the coastline. It also carries out plant and pest control, helps prepare for natural disasters, and is involved in regional transport. The council is made up of nine councillors. Councillors are elected to represent constituencies (areas in the region). One councillor will be elected from the Coastal Central constituency. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Whether public transport is the responsibility of the regional or local council depends on where you are in the country. Local councils also own 87% of New Zealand’s roads.

  • Review the Northland Regional Land Transport Plan for emissions reduction – walking, cycling, public transport and electric vehicle charging network.

    Lobby and support district councils to invest further in the walking and cycling plan.

    Lobby central government to fund the design of an innovative and future-proofed transport plan for our rural region.

  • Ensure that central government fund and build the planned State Highway joining Auckland to Whangārei in consultation with the Regional Transport Committee.

    Develop Marsden Point to enable container capability

    Develop a fully integrated Transport plan to include Rail, Coastal shipping and roads to reduce congestion and increase safety.
