Rates and revenue

The work of local government is funded mainly by property taxes in the local area, known as rates. This makes up around 60% of council expenditure, with the rest coming from user charges, investment income, regulatory fees and roading subsidies. Councils can also borrow money to spread the cost of large investments such as infrastructure over a longer period of time.

  • Have a zero based rating and services review as Northland Regional Council plans to raise service rates by 56 percent and targeted rates by up to 150 percent over three years.

Consult people at a local level to ascertain service needs and willingness to pay. I think council is out of touch with the ratepayer.

Investigate why fees and charges are set to go up by 24 percent over three years. Fees should reflect actual costs and not be set for chasing revenue.

  • Minimise where possible any increase in costs to ratepayers.
