Northland Regional Council

Far North General Constituency
The Northland Regional Council makes decisions about managing resources in the region, such as air, water, soil and the coastline. It also carries out plant and pest control, helps prepare for natural disasters, and is involved in regional transport. The council is made up of nine councillors. Councillors are elected to represent constituencies (areas in the region). One councillor will be elected from the Far North General constituency. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Whether public transport is the responsibility of the regional or local council depends on where you are in the country. Local councils also own 87% of New Zealand’s roads.

    Maintain subsidy for local public transport network.

    Work with relevant parties to improve the seriously bad state of roads being flagged by concerned members of the public as safety issues.

  • Fight for sufficient road maintenance and improvement funds so our roads are safe and resilient. Roads north of Whangārei are the pits. Why?

    Get more people on our buses. They are underutilised. Why? Those that call for them don't seem to use them.

    Hold responsible the people who mismanage our roads like SH1 Mangamuka. Roads are like teeth. Its far cheaper to look after them well.
