Porirua City Council

Parirua Māori Ward
The Porirua City Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 10 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the city). One councillor will be elected from the Parirua ward. This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Porirua City Council election.

Utilities and services

Councils are responsible for a wide range of utilities and services that we all rely on, from rubbish and recycling to street cleaning. Councils are currently also responsible for managing waste water, storm water and drinking water infrastructure – the ‘Three Waters’. But that may be about to change, with central government seeking to shift the delivery of Three Waters services to four new larger entities, which could borrow enough to upgrade the country’s water infrastructure.

  • Encourage our council to continue to look at ways to re-home all good-natured dogs no matter the breed.

Continue to support our recycling initiative in those suburbs where it doesn't go into the waste every week due to contamination.

Safe water supply is a right! Support all initiatives.

  • Promote waste minimisation through the inclusion of two extra bins, one for garden waste and one for food scraps. Decreasing landfill.

Take a more holistic Māori approach to our wai. All Three Waters should not be separated into siloed plans/strategies. It doesn't work.
