New Plymouth General Constituency
The Taranaki Regional Council makes decisions about managing resources in the region, such as air, water, soil and the coastline. It also carries out plant and pest control, helps prepare for natural disasters, and is involved in regional transport. The council is made up of 11 councillors. Councillors are elected to represent constituencies (areas in the region). Five councillors will be elected from the New Plymouth constituency. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Whether public transport is the responsibility of the regional or local council depends on where you are in the country. Local councils also own 87% of New Zealand’s roads.

  • Pursue central government to improve our roads in the region.

    Work with council and Waka Kotahi to build a walkway/cycle lane to Waitara. People then could commute on e-bikes.

    Work out how our public transport can be improved for all parties.

  • Review public transport system in New Plymouth to ensure a long-term, sustainable integrated system is in place to grow use.

    Support more cycleways and lanes for micro electric vehicles.

    Continue to lobby for Taranaki's fair share of New Zealand Transport Agency funding to ensure state highways are adequately maintained.

  • Improve public transport services to provide equitable access to job opportunities and social activities in the evenings and weekends.

    Improve the quality and resilience of Taranaki roads to increase public safety, preventing potholes and ensure public transport access.

    Collaborate with district councils to improve safe infrastructure for cyclists and pedestrians.
