The Waihoro Spreydon-Cashmere-Heathcote Community Board represents your local community and advocates to Christchurch City Council about local issues, including public transport and facilities such as libraries and parks. The board is made up of nine members: six members elected by voters, including two members from your area, and three councillors from the Christchurch City council. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Whether public transport is the responsibility of the regional or local council depends on where you are in the country. Local councils also own 87% of New Zealand’s roads.

Helping communities get from A to B is a key responsibility of local government, from making sure the buses run on time to providing car parking and walking and cycling paths.   • Invest in rapid mass transport to create a functional public transport network for Christchurch.

    Create living streets that provide safe spaces for cars, bikes, pedestrians and kids walking to school.

    Improve the safety of intersections and roadways for all road users.

  • Work towards getting better public transport for Christchurch; either as a mass upgrade of the bus system, new light rail, or a combination.

    Focus on making sure that cycling is safe and accessible, enough that children would feel confident to ride to school.

    Encourage people to reduce the amount they drive, and to use public or active transport instead through appropriate upgrades.

  • Fix roads and footpaths where most needed.

    Ensure the completion of major infrastructure programmes.

    Ensure the ports have capacity for growth.
