Waikato Regional Council

Waipā-King Country General Constituency
The Waikato Regional Council makes decisions about managing resources in the region, such as air, water, soil and the coastline. It also carries out plant and pest control, helps prepare for natural disasters, and is involved in regional transport. The council is made up of 14 councillors. Councillors are elected to represent constituencies (areas in the region). Two councillors will be elected from the Waipā-King Country constituency. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Climate change and resilience

Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

  • Stop the Three Waters bill. I will advocate hard for the bill to be shelved. Co-governance must be reined in. It's undemocratic.

    Ensure rates are kept below the consumers price index. I will not support rates increases. In my previous term (2013-2016) we reduced rates by 3%. I will repeat

    Support council's core business. Ensure ratepayers are heard, and their issues championed on all council decisions.

  • Support our Agriculture sector to reduce their emissions, particularly in areas of Waikato Regional Council expertise such as riparian and soil conservation planting.

    Work constructively with district councils to ensure a coordinated approach to managed retreat for our vulnerable coastal communities.

    Ensure our public transport policies and associated programmes. are taking all opportunities to reduce our transport emissions profile.

  • Encourage investment that enables science research to provide validated greenhouse gas emissions reduction solutions for the agriculture sector.

    Develop the council's risk assessment tools and data resources so there is greater awareness of risks and effective risk mitigation solutions.

    Work with industry and agriculture sector groups to identity practicable steps that enable resilience in the face of government driven change.
