Mayor of Wairoa

The mayor is the leader of the council. Their job is to promote a vision for the district and lead the development of the council’s plans, policies and budget. The mayor appoints the deputy mayor, establishes committees for particular topics, and appoints chairs for those committees. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Wairoa District Council mayoral election.

Why I'm standing

I believe strongly that the people of Wairoa deserve better than what the council has been delivering. I know I will do a great job on council and make changes for the better. I focus on developing people and community rather than unnecessary buildings. As a retired physicist, my specialty and expertise is in identifying and solving problems. The ones we have can be fixed.

About me

I believe that every person has untapped potential and, just as some outsiders do not appreciate Wairoa, the present council does not appreciate all the people. I have always supported unions. I have some experience in community organisations, but none in local government except as a frequent commentator and submitter. I can see to the core of problems and be part of a team that finds solutions.

My priorities
  1. Lower rates. This is my first priority because our rates are among the highest in the country.
  2. Introduce a development levy at a realistic rate. Wairoa should not be paying for developer profits.
  3. Make council more open, responsive to concerns, and accessible by the community.
