Waitomo District Council

Waitomo Rural Ward
The Waitomo District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of six councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Three councillors will be elected from the Waitomo Rural ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Waitomo District Council election.

Why I'm standing

I believe that with national government changes to local government roles it is important to have councillors who are willing to listen to local needs and advocate for them openly and honestly. I am also concerned that many changes being instigated in the name of 'climate change' are impractical and against the common good and will result in a reduction of our unique national and local characteristics.

About me

I have been a member of several community organisations in various roles, including President of Victoria University Toastmasters and so understand the way decisions are made and how to negotiate and communicate effectively. I have a higher degree and have also had a varied work history from professional to teaching and agriculture. I have always been interested in politics, have a journalism diploma and am skilled at researching both through the internet and through literature.

My priorities
  1. Improve roading on both sealed and unsealed roads for rural economies, residents and tourism.
  2. Join Waitomo Council to the 31 other 'Communities 4 Local Democracy' for more efficient governance.
  3. Ensure that the SNA categories (Significant Natural Areas) are identified fairly and sensitively.
