Motukairangi/Eastern General Ward
The Wellington City Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 15 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the city). Three councillors will be elected from the Motukairangi/Eastern ward. This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper.   • Inclusion of the estimated 5000 strong local Greek ethnic community into the Council Summer Festival program.

    Local libraries to be encouraged vs central large libraries and more security in central library from troublesome people and expand city wifi.

    Develop the former Kilbirnie Bowls land site next to the pool purchased in 2018 to actual community use not a mudpool that it is currently.

  • Reduce fees for council park and sports facilities.

    Promote free communities events and festivals.

    Reduce liquor license fees and time for application.

  • Expand discounts on LeisureCard scheme – giving those experiencing hardship free access to places like the zoo, Zealandia and our pools.

    Reduce fees for sport organisations and conduct a facilities review so that every child in a low-income family can afford to play sport.

    Increase artist support in grants funding; from the freelance creator with a small show, to having more festivals like Cuba Dupa.

  • Commit to bringing large scale events to Wellington.

    Work to ensure the community have access to high quality parks and pools at cost-effective prices.

  • Support the development of cultural festivals/events and centres such as Fale Malae.

    Restore the ingoa tūturu (original names) of Te Whanganui a Tara streets, suburbs and natural features.

    Fund free sessions of shows for school trips on weekdays to ensure the arts remain part of our Wellington culture now and in the future.

  • Ensure we get real value from our new Takina Convention and Exhibition Centre, it's great that it's already got lots of bookings.

    Continue to focus on getting the Central Library strengthened and re-opened.

    Encourage more community festivals, ethnic celebrations – and let's have more dancing!

  • Continue support for cultural and sporting activities.

    Review the ownership structure and charges of council-owned theatres.

    Review sports facility charges to ensure affordability and fairness. People (especially children) should not be discouraged by charges.

  • Prioritise hosting cultural events in order to increase tourism.

  • General support for the arts and culture.

    Keep a firm hand on licensing and encourage safety in the city around drinking and behaviour.
