Katikati-Waihi Beach Ward
The Western Bay of Plenty District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 11 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Three councillors will be elected from the Katikati-Waihi Beach ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Utilities and services

Councils are responsible for a wide range of utilities and services that we all rely on, from rubbish and recycling to street cleaning. Councils are currently also responsible for managing waste water, storm water and drinking water infrastructure – the ‘Three Waters’. But that may be about to change, with central government seeking to shift the delivery of Three Waters services to four new larger entities, which could borrow enough to upgrade the country’s water infrastructure.

  • Provide and resource a townsman for Katikati and Waihi Beach. Local people looking after our town centre and other high profile sites.

    Employ and resource a person to obtain compliance with the dog and parking issues in particular at high season.

    Free high speed broadband for visitors in the CBD.

  • Retain local ownership and control of Three Waters, and continue prudent management thereof, to ensure ongoing viability of the resource.

    Introduce recycling of soft plastic and plastic in discarded clothing, vehicles, appliances and furniture, to reduce harm to the environment.

    Introduce licensing of all dogs and cats to ensure responsible ownership and reduce harm to native flora and fauna.

  • Improve waste management and minimisation by providing a transfer station for our district alongside a re-use centre.

    Navigate the changes arising from the Three Waters reforms and take advantage of opportunities that arise such as the Better Off funding.

  • Review, analyse and establish better rubbish efficiency.

  • Three waters to be kept within the control of council and collaborate with local councils when necessary.

    Sustain the sense of pride people have in our community by ensuring roads are clean and pathways and sidewalks are neat.

    Ensure rural areas have facilities and dump sites available to dispose of their rubbish and recycling.

  • Oppose Three Waters as undemocratic, bad for our community (including iwi) and a profit-driven model promoted by major water companies.

    Promote recycling and ease cost on ratepayers by increasing rubbish disposal costs and cutting recycling rates. Review current spending.

    Publish online schedules for road cleaning, parks mowing etc etc so residents know when work is due and can monitor if it has been done.
