The Western Bay of Plenty District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 11 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Four councillors will be elected from the Maketu-Te Puke ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper.   • Ensure that consenting processes are appropriate but are not discouraging businesses from undertaking new ventures/expansion.

    Advocate strongly for the ongoing development of Rangiuru Business Park. This will create massive employment opportunities.

    Actively encourage government job training initiatives that equip people for work.

  • Work with local businesses to train and employ locals to fill jobs especially in the Kiwifruit industry. Creating more job opportunities.

    Work towards better use of our community spaces like parks and tracks/walkways.

    Working with our communities to be more tourist friendly. Create events and activities that would attract visitors. Becoming a destination.

  • Encourage social procurement when letting council contracts., eg include provision for employing locals, youth and utilising local suppliers.

    Continue support for local community service delivery contractors, eg main street organisations, environmental and social care groups.

    Establish more shared services and joined-up contracts across the sub-region to take advantage of economies of scale and increased buying power.

  • Discuss with local businesses options for work experience/internship/apprenticeships. Issues of staffing shortages/unemployment could ease.

    Infrastructure must grow before forecasted increase of population to the area.

    Tourism industry are their own experts in marketing. Council liaise/consider/support industry initiatives.
