The Western Bay of Plenty District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 11 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Four councillors will be elected from the Maketu-Te Puke ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Utilities and services

Councils are responsible for a wide range of utilities and services that we all rely on, from rubbish and recycling to street cleaning. Councils are currently also responsible for managing waste water, storm water and drinking water infrastructure – the ‘Three Waters’. But that may be about to change, with central government seeking to shift the delivery of Three Waters services to four new larger entities, which could borrow enough to upgrade the country’s water infrastructure.

Utilities and services

Councils are responsible for a wide range of utilities and services that we all rely on, from rubbish and recycling to street cleaning. Councils are currently also responsible for managing waste water, storm water and drinking water infrastructure – the ‘Three Waters’. But that may be about to change, with central government seeking to shift the delivery of Three Waters services to four new larger entities, which could borrow enough to upgrade the country’s water infrastructure.

  • Encourage increased glass, recycling and rubbish separation and collection to minimise waste to landfills. Maintain affordable service.

    Support guaranteed council ownership and timely investment decisions to support planned growth and renewal projects for Three Waters infrastructure.

    Ensure certainty and peace of mind for rural water suppliers and users as regards access, allocation, consents, level of service and pricing.

  • Stop Three Waters. Council to manage our own assets and collaborate with our councils on best practice management going forward.

    Review animal control policies with an aim of 'fit for purpose' compliance. Policies should be owner and pet friendly.

    Introduce incentives for street proud initiatives from businesses/residents. Each take responsibility for their space working with council's inputs.

  • Increase the types of plastic that can be recycled and take a Singapore style approach to people who toss rubbish out the car window.

    Work to reduce water wastage which will also reduce pressure on waste water plants. Encourage technologies that reduce the contaminant load.

  • Adopting waste minimisation strategies. Recycling centres being community run – recycling and repurposing recyclables.

    Protecting our council assets around the Three Waters. Keeping it local.

    Increase the standards of street cleaning in CBD area. Service contracts awarded to best contractor.

  • Negotiate with central government to compensate us for the wonderful work previous councils have managed regarding our Three Waters policy.

    Introduce rotational street cleaning and bring rigour to animal control.

    Introduce rubbish collection to be funded in our existing rates.
