Mayor of Westland District

The mayor is the leader of the council. Their job is to promote a vision for the district and lead the development of the council’s plans, policies and budget. The mayor appoints the deputy mayor, establishes committees for particular topics, and appoints chairs for those committees. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Westland District Council mayoral election.

Why I'm standing

I will lead a hard-working, connected and community focussed council that listens, responds, and is accountable. Under my leadership, all council activities will be completely reviewed focusing on consolidation, improvements and savings. We face tough economic times and complex challenges moving forward including Three Waters and local government reform. You deserve a Mayor who understands, pushes back on Government and bureaucracy and works tirelessly for Westland.

About me

I am the most experienced candidate for Westland Mayor after serving nine years as Councillor, Deputy Mayor and Chair of Council Committees and Companies. I know how things work within council, what needs to change, and how to do it. Westland is in my DNA. I come from generations of farmers and business owners and was privileged to grow up and now live in Hokitika with my fiancé, Phoebe.

My priorities
  1. Limit rate rises to a maximum of 5% and prioritise debt repayment.
  2. Cap Council staff numbers at the current level.
  3. Review every budget and activity refocusing expenditure on core services.
