Whangārei District Council

Hikurangi-Coastal General Ward
The Whangārei District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 13 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Two councillors will be elected from the Hikurangi-Coastal ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper.   • Investigate options for repurposing of Forum North as an arts and entertainment centre and therefore a cultural hub for the inner city.

    Develop connection from the Quarry Arts Centre, Forum North, Town Basin/Hundertwasser and Hihiaua to enhance Whangārei's cultural assets.

    Further invest in cycleways and footpaths across the city to connect communities and allow people to get around in a free and active way.

  • Develop strategy for sports field renovations from soil-based to sand-based fields and re-evaluate the current lighting strategy.

    Support the Forum North Trust to redevelop the current theatre facilities.

    Ensure the current policy regarding community use of Semenoff Stadium is fit for purpose and affordable for community organisations.
