Hikurangi-Coastal General Ward
The Whangārei District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 13 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Two councillors will be elected from the Hikurangi-Coastal ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper.   • Work with commercial property owners within the CBD to encourage the development of inner city living.

    Review current zoning to look at opportunities to create further commercial zone area's north of Kamo.

    Develop strategies alongside social housing providers to enable development of further social housing projects.

  • Implement council's upcoming housing strategy to make Papakainga developments more streamlined and simplify consenting processes.

    Incentivise developers to build in the central city precinct to increase vibrancy and enable more people to enjoy new public spaces.

    Enable more viable development in close proximity to town centres to stop sprawl from encroaching on prime horticultural/agricultural land.

  • Continue to promote housing solutions in the district (current chair of the housing strategy).

    Promote better understanding of the district plan.
