North Shore Ward
The Auckland Council makes strategic decisions for Auckland on public transport, urban planning, environmental protection and other big issues. The council provides funding to local boards to provide public services in their areas, and manages council-controlled organisations which provide infrastructure, such as public transport, water and sewerage. The councillors and mayor make up the governing body, which shares governance of Auckland Council with the 21 local boards. The governing body is made up of 20 councillors plus the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in Auckland). two councillors will be elected from your ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Climate change and resilience

Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

Climate change and resilience

Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

  • Invest in stormwater systems and stop banks to protect homes, businesses and communities from severe weather.

    Remove emissions considerations from all council decisions and consent processes and prioritise value for money.

    Stop wasting ratepayers' money on emissions cuts and refocus council on delivering core local services instead of climate activism.

  • Commit to providing free public transport, or as close to free as possible, to ensure a viable alternative to cars.

    Stop all development in flood plains and fix deficiencies in stormwater infrastructure. Flooding is expected to increase as the climate changes.

    Support continuing the climate action targeted rate to continue investment into lowering emissions, active infrastructure and tree planting.

  • Deliver stage 1 flood protection at AF Thomas Park alongside golf and stages 2 and 3 of flood protection to ensure a safer Wairau catchment.

    Embed civil defence plans to ensure a more resilient community for all as the community continues to adapt to climate change.

    Secure well-managed flood protection to ensure we do not see a repeat of the devastating 2023 floods.

  • Commit council to being carbon neutral by 2030 based on the Paris climate change agreement signed by New Zealand.

    Liaise with NZ Civil Defence and other relevant stakeholders to ensure preemptive response to floods and other natural calamities.

    Review earthquake strengthening procedures and conduct due diligence on current operating systems.
