Utilities and services
Councils are responsible for a wide range of utilities and services that we all rely on, from rubbish and recycling to street cleaning. Councils are currently also responsible for managing waste water, storm water and drinking water infrastructure – the ‘Three Waters’. But that may be about to change, with central government seeking to shift the delivery of Three Waters services to four new larger entities, which could borrow enough to upgrade the country’s water infrastructure.

Enact policy that prioritises the wellbeing of the environment to ensure it takes an intergenerational and precautionary approach.
Increase public education on responsible animal ownership, enforce existing bylaws more strictly and support proactive community patrols.
Support a 'catchment' approach, mountains to sea, investing in long-term water source protection.
Advocate for climate-resilient stormwater and wastewater infrastructure that meets needs of growing population.
Review centralisation of council services and where appropriate, return local services to control of local boards.
Support reduce, reuse and recycle in waste recovery, and promote groups like the ReCreators and new Tipping Point centre.
